Albert Michael Smith, lovingly known as Mike to those close to him, passed away peacefully at his home in Alexander County on July 26, 2026, at the age of 74. Born on November 14, 1951, in Alexander County, Mike led a life marked by devotion to family, pride in service, and enduring friendship.
Son of the late Albert Waitsel Smith and Annie Almeta Smith, Mike was shaped by strong family roots and values that he would carry forward throughout his life. He took immense pride in his military service, having honorably served his country in The United States Air Force. This chapter in his life was a point of personal pride and great fulfillment, underscoring his sense of duty and dedication. After his time in the Air Force, Mike embarked on a career as a heating and air technician and also spent time as a truck driver.
Outside his professional endeavors, Mike found joy in simple pleasures and shared interests. He truly enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting and fishing—a passion he passed along to family and friends, creating cherished memories. In recent years, he found enjoyment in the digital world, often watching YouTube and connecting with others on Facebook.
Family meant everything to Mike. He is survived by his loving children: his son Chris Smith and daughter-in-law Jodi Smith, and his daughters April Smith and Rita Schoeberlein. His presence will be deeply missed by his grandchildren: Christiania Michelle Smith, Jamie Ann Smith, Katie Owens, Carli Owens, Timothy Roden, Tyler Roden, and Macey Roden and husband Evan Sherrill. Mike also leaves behind great-grandchildren Bridger Scott Sherrill and Elloree Michelle Sherrill, whose lives he touched immeasurably. Mike’s memory will be cherished by his brothers and their spouses—Gerald Smith and Peggy, Donnie Smith and Anita, Dwight Smith and Lotty, and Aaron Smith and Libby. He is also survived by his special friend, Stacey Hughes.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Alexander Funeral Service, located at 193 NC-16, Taylorsville, NC 28681.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Big Hearts Outdoors, 773 Old Charlotte Road, Taylorsville, NC 28681.
Mike will be remembered for his kindness, commitment, and the legacy of love and service he leaves behind in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who knew him.
