Bruce Edward Smith, age 83, born on May 28, 1942, in Caldwell County, peacefully passed away on May 15, 2026, at Valley Nursing Center in Alexander County. He lived a life marked by dedication—to his work, his family, and his community.

During his working career, Bruce was a skilled carpenter and also managed two large chicken houses as a chicken farmer. His commitment and hard work were evident in all that he undertook. Beyond his professional life, Bruce was deeply passionate about camping and traveling, pursuits that brought him joy and memorable experiences.

Bruce was a devoted member of Antioch Baptist Church. His love for the church and his church family was a defining part of his character and spiritual life.

One of Bruce’s proudest accomplishments was his long-standing service on the Alexander Rescue Squad. He faithfully served for over 20 years and was honored to become a lifetime member in 1986. Additionally, Bruce’s compassion extended profoundly into foster parenting, where he dedicated 30 years to nurturing and caring for 100 children, reflecting his generous and loving spirit.

Bruce cherished his family above all else, always making time to be there for them. His loving presence and support were the foundation of many treasured memories. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jay Van Smith and Edna Cline Smith, and by his beloved wife of 63 years, Sandra Davis Smith.

He is survived by his devoted children: Melissa Autry (Carl) of Statesville, Rhonda Hamby (Doug) of Taylorsville, and Roger Smith (Lisa) of Taylorsville. His grandchildren, who carry forward his legacy, include Travis Pennell (Hope) of Taylorsville, Brandon Hamby (Kayla) of Taylorsville, Dustin Hamby (Rebecca) of Hickory, Casey Helton of Statesville, and Riley Smith (Ruthie) of Trinity, NC. His great-grandchildren are Christopher and Caitlyn Pennell, Keaton and Blaine Hamby, Aspen and Ronan Hamby all from Taylorsville, and Baby Smith on the way. Bruce’s family circle also includes his brothers Larry Smith (Peggy) of Hickory and Dennis Smith of Granite Falls, his sister Jean Starnes (Henry) of Taylorsville, his uncle Harold Cline (Barbara) of Granite Falls, and his aunt Irene Oliver of Taylorsville, all of whom remember him with great affection and respect.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to Hospice of Iredell County and the Rescue Squad for their compassionate care and participation in the service.
