Craig Blackwood Collins, Sr.

Craig Blackwood Collins, Sr., age 80, passed away on August 29, 2026, at Mountain View Manor in Bryson City, North Carolina. He was born on September 19, 1945, in Richland County, South Carolina, to the late Clyde Collins and Helen Bridgers Collins.

Craig proudly served his country in the United States Army and was a Vietnam veteran. During his military service, he received numerous commendations in recognition of his service and dedication to his country.

Some of Craig’s fondest memories began during his childhood. During summer breaks from school, his father, Clyde, who drove for Clark Tire Company, would take Craig along with him as his “co-pilot.” Craig treasured those times with his father, and years later, after leaving the military and beginning a similar job, he continued that special tradition by taking his own son, Craig Jr., along with him. What began as precious time between a father and son became a generational tradition and a special bonding experience that Craig Jr. remained deeply grateful to have shared with his dad.

Craig was a hardworking man who spent many years providing for his family and later retired from Perry Armature Company. He was also a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, where his faith was an important part of his life. Craig gave back to his community through his service with the Bethlehem Fire Department.

Following Craig’s diagnosis with dementia, his devoted wife, Frances, lovingly cared for him at home. After Frances was involved in a tragic automobile accident in December 2024, his son, Craig Jr., stepped in to ensure that his father continued to receive the care he needed at home. Craig remained there until his care needs eventually required skilled nursing care and he was placed in a nursing facility. Even as dementia changed many things in Craig’s life, the love he carried for his family remained strong. At both the beginning and end of visits, Craig would often speak of how much he missed Craig Jr. and Frances and would ask that they be told how much he loved them. Those simple words reflected what mattered most to Craig—his family—and will remain a treasured memory for those who loved him.

Craig is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Frances Blair Collins; his son, Craig Collins; his grandchildren, Jonathan Collins and William Collins; and one great-grandson.

In addition to his parents, Clyde Collins and Helen Bridgers Collins, Craig was preceded in death by his sister, Karen Collins Smart.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. in the Dudley Shoals Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Dean Chambers will officiate.

Craig will be remembered as a proud veteran, a hardworking man, and, above all, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. The memories passed from father to son, the love he held so deeply for Frances and Craig Jr., and the life he shared with those around him will remain a lasting part of his legacy. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family and all who knew him.
