Donnie Jay Shumaker, age 71, born on October 28, 1954, in Iredell County, passed away peacefully at his home in Iredell County on June 23, 2026. Throughout his 71 years, Donnie's life touched the hearts of all who knew him, and his legacy will be cherished by family, friends, and the community alike.
Donnie was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Union Grove, where his faith was a cornerstone of his life. Those who knew Donnie well will remember his deep love for his family, especially his grandchildren and watching them play in the snow. He also loved the yearly Christmas tree outing with his family. Donnie had a love for all animals, but his dog Princess and squirrel Frisky held a special place in his heart. He enjoyed being outdoors walking in the woods, creeks, and going fishing. Donnie will always be remembered for being an avid Yankees fan.
Donnie was devoted to his family, and his love was unwavering. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Donna Shumaker, whose steadfast partnership brought warmth and joy into his days. Those who knew Donnie will remember his deep sense of devotion not only to his family but also as a friend and confidant to many.
Among those surviving Donnie are his children, Michelle Mooe, Eric Mooe, Shanna Speaks, Chris Mooe; grandchildren, Dylan Speaks (Lindsay), Chanler Speaks, Austin, Jordan, and Dustin Mooe; great-grandchildren, Elijah Speaks, Luke Speaks, Nathan Speaks; and sisters-in-law, Tammy Norton (Barry), and Tammy Loudermelt. Each of them carries forward precious memories and the values Donnie instilled through his kindness, wisdom, and generosity of spirit.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Vance Shumaker and Gladys Dishmond Shumaker, as well as his son-in-law, Stony Speaks, brother-in-law, Randy Loudermelt, mother-in-law, Ruby Davis, and his special cousin, Noel Dishmond.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Calvary Baptist Church, located at 300 Indian Hill Rd, Union Grove, NC 28689, giving friends and loved ones the opportunity to gather and remember Donnie. The funeral service will be Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Calvary Baptist Church at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pastor Stephen Pope will officiate. Austin Mooe, Eric Mooe, Chris Mooe, Dylan Speaks, Darrell McDaniels, and Anthony Davis will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625.
Though Donnie is no longer present, his influence, compassion, and love remain woven through the lives of all he touched. His memory will endure in the hearts of his family and friends, forever remembered and forever cherished.
