Dorothy Clair Berny Karvelis

March 13, 1936 — July 3, 2024

Dorothy Karvelis, 88 of Taylorsville, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, July 3, 2024. She was welcomed into her heavenly home by her husband Julie, who she missed terribly and whom she awaited to be reunited with. Born in Astoria, New York on March 13, 1936, to Clara Harms and Herman Berny. She was the middle child, enduring the brotherly harassment of her older brother Hermie and enjoying the sisterly shenanigans with younger sister Cathy. Dotty soared to Supervisor at the New York Telephone Company for 22 years, before starting a family. Returning to work after her husband passed away, she worked in the Records Department at The Delaware Valley Job Corps for 13 years before moving to North Carolina to enjoy retirement.

Dotty was a loving wife, meeting her husband Julie bowling in New York. They were married shortly after and was always at her husband's side, whether it was raising their family, building their home in Pennsylvania or tending to their little farm Sunny Acres'. She was a devoted Mother, doing anything she could for her daughter and son. A doting Grandmother, loving each of her 4 grandchildren with a never-ending love. A sister, aunt, cousin, and friend touching each person she met in her special way. Dotty was an active member in the Brushy Mountain Quilters Guild and was a very talented quilter. She was also an active member at Holy Trinity Catholic Church where you would find her on Tuesday’s counting the Sunday collection. If you were driving past her house, chances are you would see her in her gardens pulling weeds or mowing the yard, as long as it wasn’t a Monday or Wednesday at 10 am, because that was her work out class at the YMCA. Her greatest joy was watching her children become successful in their occupations and becoming a Grandmother. She adored her grandchildren and was so very proud of all their accomplishments and special time spent with them.

She is survived by her two children, Liz Cronan and her husband Scott of Taylorsville, Tom Karvelis, and his wife Anna of Independence Township, Pennsylvania, four grandchildren Julianna & Leah Cronan of Taylorsville and Jules & Timothy Karvelis of Independence Township, Pennsylvania. Her sister Cathy Cummings and her husband, Ray, and her adored nieces and nephews in Tennessee and New York and North Carolina, as well as many friends.

A celebration of Dotty's beautiful life will begin with a visitation at Alexander Funeral Service on Sunday, July 7, 2024, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. A funeral Mass will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Monday, July 8, 2024, at 10:00 am. She will be laid to rest at Pinelawn National Cemetery on Long Island, New York, with her beloved husband, Julius Karvelis. Father Jose C. Cardena will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Judy’s Joy in care of First Community Bank, 92 N Center Street, Taylorsville, NC 28681.
