Dwight Thomas Walker, affectionately known as "Buckwheat," age 81, was born on Wednesday, June 9, 1943, in Alexander County. He passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Carolina Caring in Catawba County, just two days shy of his 82nd birthday. Dwight was a devoted family man and a stalwart member of his community, known for his warmth, kindness, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.
During his working career, Dwight served as a flock supervisor for Perdue Farms and Showell Farms. After retirement, he embraced a new chapter of life, taking to the open road as a truck driver for Alexander Trucking and Carrigan & Sons.
Dwight's love for family was paramount in his life. He cherished spending time with them, particularly enjoying moments watching his grandchildren play ball. His passion for gardening and fondness for traveling to Gatlinburg complemented his easy-going personality, making him a beloved figure in both his family and social circles. Additionally, Dwight was a passionate fan of the Atlanta Braves, often cheering them on with great enthusiasm.
A faithful member of Three Forks Baptist Church, Dwight actively participated in church activities, especially the Vacation Bible School, where he made a significant impact on the lives of children. His affiliation with the Ellendale Ruritan Club further showcased his commitment to serving his community and fostering connections.
Dwight is survived by his devoted wife of 26 years, Gayle Walker; his son Stephen Walker (Misty); and his daughter Andrea Sherrill (Bryan). He was a proud grandfather to Cohen Sherrill, Rylee Gunter, Kingston Sherrill, Widelin Sherrill, Lucinda Walker, and Waitsel Walker. Additionally, he is mourned by his loving sisters, Bernice Hudspeth (Lawrence) and Jane Pennell, and his brother Charles Walker (Joann), along with a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dwight was preceded in death by his parents, Lindsay Hall Walker and Lona Belle Land Walker; his sister Annette W. Elder (Jack); his brother Ronnie Walker; and his brother-in-law Grady Pennell.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Three Forks Baptist Church, located at 4685 Three Forks Church Rd, Taylorsville, NC 28681. The funeral service will be Thursday, June 12, 2025, at Three Forks Baptist Church at 3:00 pm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Dr. Rev. Carson Moseley and Pastor Larry Holleman. Chris Echerd, Tommy Walker, Dustin Queen, Roger Pennell, Richard Milstead, Wesley Milstead, Wade Queen, and Nathan Robinson will serve as pallbearers. Ellendale Ruritan Club and Homemaker Sunday School Class will be honorary pallbearers.

Dwight’s spirit and memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
