George Nelson Westover, age 83, born on November 24, 1942, in Alum Bank, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2026, at the Gordon Hospice House in Iredell County. A cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, George leaves behind a legacy defined by love for family, steadfast service, and a passionate commitment to both work and personal pursuits.
George’s dedication to his country was reflected in his proud service in the United States Navy. This sense of duty and honor carried through every facet of his life. George began his electronics career at Sears, eventually with his own television repair business in Pennsylvania, working his way up through hard work and dedication. After moving to North Carolina, he joined General Instrument in Catawba County, where his strong work ethic and leadership abilities helped him advance through the company and eventually earn a management position.
Outside of work, George’s interests were as wide-ranging as they were heartfelt. Bluegrass music was a constant companion throughout his life; he found great joy playing the mandolin and guitar and was a member of many bands. His mechanical abilities were well-known—George loved working on cars and had an uncanny ability to fix anything. Building houses on his own was more than a hobby; it was another way he expressed perseverance, skill, and care for those around him.
A man whose faith was important to him, George attended Freedom Baptist Church, drawing strength and comfort from his spiritual community.
Most of all, George loved his family deeply. He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Pat E. Westover; his sons, Doug Westover (Patti) and Chris Westover (Angela); adopted daughter, Michelle Stafford; his sister, Roxie Mackel; his grandchildren, Cheryl Hyder, Timothy George Westover (Sandra); his great-grandchildren, Atlas Westover, Aria Westover, Cindy Hyder, and Levi Hyder. George’s steadfast love was felt by each family member and will live on in their hearts.
He is preceded in death by his father, Karl James Westover; his mother, Gladys Pearl Williams Westover; his brother, Sonny Westover; his great-granddaughter, Quincy Westover, and his sisters, Imogene Oldham and Juanita Hengst.
A private family inurnment will take place at Salisbury National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Freedom Baptist Church in care of missions, 126 Sulphur Springs Road, Hiddenite, NC 28636
George’s memory will be carried forward by all who knew him—each note played on a mandolin, each house built with care, and every life he touched is a testament to a life lived with integrity and affection. His presence, devotion, and kindness will long be remembered by the many lives he graced.
