Harold Nathaniel Simmons, age 68, a beloved husband, dad, poppa, brother, and friend, passed away on February 11, 2026, at UNC Chapel Hill. Born on June 20, 1957, in Watauga County, Harold lived a life rich in love for his heavenly Father, family, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature.
Harold was a man who found joy in the simplest of moments, especially when surrounded by his family and his cherished dog Joey. His love for the outdoors was evident in his many hobbies. He relished spending time in the woods, where he felt closest to God. Whether it was hunting or fishing, he embraced every opportunity to connect with nature and share these experiences with his loved ones.
He leaves behind a devoted family who will forever cherish their memories with him. Harold is survived by his loving wife, June Simmons; his children, Lucas Simmons, Whitney Barlow Hatfield and her husband Robert (son-in-love), and Kaitlin Barlow. His granddaughters, Hayden Hatfield (Matthew Barnette) and Frances (Frankie) Hatfield held a special place in his heart and bring to mind countless joyful moments spent together. Harold's faithful companion, Joseph Harold, a beloved pup, was by his side through many of their outdoor adventures. Harold was part of a close-knit family, including his mother, Wanda Simmons, and siblings Greg Simmons (Rita), and Renee Greene (Roy). His legacy also extends to his cousins, Clyde and Frankie Simmons, mother-in-law, Margaret Moretz, sisters-in-law, Cheryl Miller (Mike), Carla Patton (Lee), brothers-in-law, Bobby Joe Moretz (Jill), Jake Wheeler (Cher), and several nieces and nephews who will carry forward the values he instilled in them.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Simmons.
A family led celebration of life will be held on the opening day of turkey season, April 11, 2026.
As we remember Harold, we honor a life filled with love, laughter, and a profound connection to nature, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
