Horace Clark Moretz, 87, passed away on October 2, 2026, at his home in Alexander County. Mr. Moretz was born on April 20, 1939. He will be remembered as a devoted family man whose life was marked by hard work and determination. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. He enjoyed working nonstop on his tractor or loader, gardening, and cutting wood, and those who knew him will remember the steady way he approached both work and life. His favorite saying was, “all you got to do is put your mind to it buckle down buckle down do it do do it,” a reflection of the persistence and resolve that guided him through the years.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Clark Moretz; his mother, Maude Naomi Moretz; his beloved wife, Sylvia Jane Underwood Moretz, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage; his brothers, Douglas Moretz and Howard Moretz; his sisters, Mildred McRary, Beulah Poovey, Tressie Hall, and Lottie Crump; and his special nephews, Larry Moretz and Sonny Moretz.
He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Moretz Jennings and her husband, Blake; his son, Michael Clark Moretz; and his sister, Louella Herman and Jimmy. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Alyssa Moretz, Alex Moretz, Jessica Lafone and Josh, and Jordan Jennings and her fiancé, Cody Sellers. His memory will also be cherished by his great-grandchildren, Weston Lafone, Jackson Lafone, and Riley Sellers. In addition, he is survived by special nephews Sherman Moretz and Natasha, Luke Moretz, Brax Moretz, and Bo Moretz, who held a special place in his life.
Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 7500 North Carolina 127, Taylorsville, North Carolina 28681. The funeral service will follow at 4:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Burial will follow the service at Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Dean Chambers will officiate.
The family will accept flowers or donations may be made to Bethlehem Baptist Church at 7500 NC 127, Taylorsville, NC 28681.
Horace Clark Moretz will be remembered with love for his strength, his work ethic, his devotion to family, and the example he set through a life of perseverance. His presence will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
