Ida Marlene Martin Austin, age 87, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at Valley Nursing Center in Alexander County. She was born on Thursday, September 22, 1938, in Watauga County, and her life was marked by a devotion to family, work, and faith.
Marlene enjoyed a fulfilling career as a sewer at Clayton Marcus Furniture, where she worked for an impressive 30 years before her retirement. Her commitment to her craft was reflective of her diligent nature and strong work ethic. Beyond her professional life, Marlene was known for her warm personality and her deep love for her family. She cherished every moment spent with them, particularly relishing the joy they brought into her life, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A member of Millersville Baptist Church, Marlene found strength and peace in her faith, engaged in her community, and formed lasting connections with those around her. She had a passion for cooking and baking, often delighting her loved ones with her culinary creations, which will be fondly remembered by her family.
Marlene is survived by her loving daughter, Patty Austin Brown (Kevin), and her cherished grandchildren: Cory Brown and fiancé Ruth McCrary, Andrew Brown (Emily), Amanda Teague (Gary), and Megan Ammons (Will). She also delighted in her great-grandchildren, including Noah Brown, Lily Smith (Matthew), Connor Brown, Caden Brown, Will Ammons Jr., Liam Ammons, and Jada Teague, who brought immense joy to her later years.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Della VanDyke Martin; her husband of 49 years, Frank Daniel Austin; her son, Dwight Daniel Austin; and two brothers and a sister.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Alexander Funeral Service, located at 193 NC-16, Taylorsville, NC 28681. The funeral service will take place Friday, October 17, 2025, at 11:00 am, also at Alexander Funeral Service. Burial will follow in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Bill Orren will officiate.
The family will accept flowers, or donations may be made to St. Jude Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
