James Michael Burgess, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Alexander County on Monday, August 18, 2025, at the age of 67. Born on March 21, 1958, in Baltimore, Maryland, James lived a remarkable life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
James dedicated 34 years to the state of North Carolina with the majority of his career at the Department of Transportation, where his commitment and hard work were greatly appreciated. He was known for his strong work ethic and the camaraderie he built with his colleagues throughout his tenure.
Above all else, James treasured his family. He shared a steadfast bond with his wife of 27 years, Jackie Burgess. Together, they created a loving home that resonated with warmth and happiness. James was the proud father of Ethan Burgess and his wife Kate of Millers Creek, and Adrianna Allen and her husband Shawn of Wilmington, NC. He was also an adoring step-father to Kali Davidson, and is remembered by the mother of his children, Janice Chatham. His legacy will continue through his eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life. He is also survived by two nephews, numerous loved ones and special friends.
In addition to his career and family, James enjoyed a variety of hobbies that brought him great pleasure. He took joy in mowing, hunting, and collecting tools, which showcased his resourcefulness and enthusiasm for tinkering. He had a passion for music, often found singing and playing his guitar, and he found peace in vacationing by the water.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis Burgess and Vina Lucille Wallace, as well as his sister Debra Harrington and his infant daughter Amanda Burgess.

James’ life was filled with love for his family, commitment to his work, and passions that brought him joy. He will be deeply missed by his wife, children, step-daughter, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, and countless friends who were fortunate to know him. His spirit will live on in the many lives he touched.
