James Gary Millsaps, age 79, affectionately known as Gary, passed away on June 11, 2026, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Born on May 30, 1947, in Iredell County, Gary lived a life marked by dedication, service, and love for his family and community.

Gary proudly served his country in the United States Army, earning the distinction of Purple Heart recipient for his bravery and sacrifice. Following his military service, he dedicated 25 years of his working career as a supervisor at Alexvale Furniture, where his leadership and commitment were deeply respected by colleagues.

A member of Fairview Baptist Church, Gary’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. Those who knew him recall his warm spirit, generosity, and abiding devotion to his loved ones. He took great joy in caring for his yard and garden, indulged in his passion for golfing, and had a keen interest in cars. Most notably, Gary cherished his family above all else. He held a special place in his heart for his grandson Riley, delighting in watching him play ball, and eagerly anticipated the arrival of his great-grandchild Maer Smith.

Gary is lovingly survived by his wife of 58 years, Linda Sharpe Millsaps; his children Lisa Smith (Roger) and Eric Millsaps; his brother Bruce Millsaps; his sister Irene Matthews; grandson Riley Smith (Ruthie); and his sisters-in-law Kay Hubbard, Pat Wike, and Jean Watson. He also leaves behind a brother-in-law Steve Sharpe and a number of nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Troy Foy Millsaps and Flora Hendren Millsaps, as well as sister-in-law Kelsie Millsaps.

The family will honor Gary’s memory on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at Fairview Baptist Church, located at 41 Center Church Road, Hiddenite, NC 28636, at 3:00 pm. He will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Rev. Durrant Barr will officiate.
