J.D. Barnes, age 81, passed away on January 12, 2026, at Wilkes Medical Center in Wilkes County. Born on November 16, 1944, in Alexander County, J.D. lived a life filled with passion, dedication, and love for his family.
Throughout his working career, J.D. was known for his skills as a mechanic at Barnes Garage, where he applied his talents and hard work to serve those around him. He took great pride in his craftsmanship and was well-respected in his field. J.D. was a member of Salem Lutheran Church.
J.D. cherished his family above all else. He loved spending time with his loved ones, creating lasting memories that would continue to be celebrated by those he leaves behind. His hobbies included beekeeping, fishing, and rebuilding cars, pursuits that reflected his hands-on approach to life and his appreciation for nature.
He is survived by his son, Dennis Barnes (Ellen Keever); grandchildren Macey Barnes (Grayson Chapman) and Alex Barnes (Makenzie); special granddaughter Carley Rich; and great-granddaughter Maeve Chapman. J.D. is also remembered by his brothers, Johnny Barnes (Denise) and Wade Barnes; his sister-in-law, Rachel Barnes; a special nephew, Garry Lackey; and special niece, Teresa Reep (Dale). He leaves behind several nieces and nephews who will carry forth his legacy.
J.D. was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Ruby Mecimore Barnes; his wife, Linda Barnes; his brother, Jones Barnes; his sister, Sue Lackey; and his sister-in-law, Dorcas Barnes.
A visitation will take place on Sunday, January 18, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Salem Lutheran Church in Salem Hall, located at 4005 North Carolina 16, Township of Taylorsville, NC 28681. The funeral service will be at Salem Lutheran Church at 4:00 pm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pastor Michael Daniels will officiate. Rayford Deal, Grayson Chapman, Adam Lackey, Chris Ingram, Chris Barnes, and Edwin Chapman will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Levi Barnes and Shannon Millsaps

J.D. will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his spirit will continue to shine brightly through the love and connections he fostered throughout his life.
