Johnny Austin Gant, age 82, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on January 24, 1943, to Jay Carlton and Carmen Sharpe Gant, Johnny lived a life rooted in faith, family, and friendship.
A proud graduate of Stony Point High School class of 1961, Johnny met the love of his life, Carol Stikeleather, during those formative years. Together they shared 63 beautiful years of marriage, building a home filled with love, laughter, and enduring devotion.
Johnny was an Army veteran serving his country in Korea 1966-1968. After returning home, Johnny began his lifelong career as a builder, a trade he learned early on from his father. He was a builder not only by trade, but also in spirit—helping to build family, friendship, and love. Known for his quick wit, warm smile, and good humor, Johnny never met a stranger. He had a special gift for making everyone feel welcome, often with a story, a helping hand, or simply his presence.
A lifelong member of Stony Point Baptist Church, Johnny was beloved by the entire congregation, from the youngest children to fellow elders. He served as a Sunday School teacher and RA leader for junior boys, coached youth sports teams, and even played on the church’s basketball and baseball teams himself. In later years, he helped lead the senior adult group, organizing many cherished overnight trips.
Johnny loved to travel, having explored nearly every U.S. state—always taking the scenic route. He was a dedicated supporter of his children and grandchildren, showing up for every game, recital, or event with heartfelt encouragement. When not on the road or with family, he could often be found relaxing at the beach, playing a round of golf, or enjoying a ballgame at Alexander Central High School.
He also had a soft spot for classic Westerns, drawn to their stories of loyalty, grit, and simple wisdom—values that mirrored the way he lived his life.
After moving to Taylorsville, Johnny found joy in reconnecting with childhood friends and making new ones alike. Sitting on his front porch, he welcomed all who stopped by, ready to share a conversation and a story. His porch became a place of comfort and laughter.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved son, Tony Austin Gant. He is survived by his devoted wife, Carol; his children, Julie Grimes (Richard), Tyler Gant (Zach); daughter in-law April Gant; his grandchildren, Jonathan Grimes (Autumn), Olivia Grimes, and Tabitha Gant; his brother, Harry Gant (Peggy); sister, Jean Herman (Don); and sisters-in-law, Phyllis Hager (Jerry) and Brenda Elliott (Stanley). He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, connection, and unwavering love—including the family he made with his work crew, who stood by him through countless projects and shared years of camaraderie and respect.
