Leavy Smith

Leavy Smith, of the Taylorsville community, passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at his home. Born on Tuesday, July 6, 1948, in Summerton, South Carolina. He enriched the lives of others with his smiles, laughs, and dedication to his family friends.

Leavy devoted his career to teaching others working in upholstery at Bassett Furniture for 17 years. His kindness and welcoming spirit were evident to all who crossed his path. He cherished spending time with his loved ones, creating countless precious memories that will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Diane Howell Smith, one son, Franklin Howell, three grandchildren, Davanta Lackey, Shakyra Smith, Kiron Howell, and three great-grandchildren also mourning his loss. He is also survived by his siblings, Lila Jackson (Generette), Sallie William (Hercules), Margaret Rhames (Kevin), Elijah Oliver Jr. (Rhonda), and Blannie Lee Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ollie Lee Smith and Susannah Jones Smith, daughter, Missy Parson, infant grandson, Antwan Millsaps, sister, Mary Oliver, brothers, Sylvester Smith (Frances), Linell Smith.

Leavy will lie in state Friday, May 15, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at St. John Baptist Church. The funeral service will be at 2:00 pm at St. John Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Rev. T.E. Martin and Rev. James Ferguson will officiate.

The family will accept donations at Alexander Funeral Service to help with funeral expenses.
