Martha Mae Gwatlney Stikeleather, age 87, formerly of York Institute in Hiddenite, beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2026, at TerraBella Assisted Living in Catawba County. Born on May 26, 1939, in Alexander County, Martha’s life was characterized by devotion to her family, steadfast faith, and dedication to her community.

Martha was raised amidst the fields and open spaces of her childhood home, where farming instilled in her an enduring appreciation for nature, a love of being outdoors, and a passion for gardening. These simple joys remained with her throughout her life, reflecting in the way she found contentment and purpose in nurturing everything—and everyone—around her.

Throughout her career, Martha served as a secretary for the Alexander County Railroad, where she worked diligently for over thirty years. Her professionalism, attention to detail, and genuine kindness left a lasting impression on her colleagues and all who had the pleasure to work alongside her.

A woman of deep faith, Martha was a devoted member of Rocky Springs Methodist Church. For many years, she served as the organist, uplifting the congregation with her music and spirit each Sunday. Her commitment to her church and its worship services was among her proudest accomplishments—a testament to her devotion to her faith community.

Family was always at the heart of Martha’s life. She cherished time spent with loved ones and found immense joy in baking and cooking for them, creating delicious meals and fond memories around her table. Her warm presence, generous heart, and caring ways were the anchors of family gatherings and celebrations.

Martha is survived by her sons, Keith Stikeleather (Terri) and John Stikeleather (Kathy); her granddaughters, Moranda DeSpain (Josh) and Kimberly Gordon (Matt); and her loving great-grandchildren, Elyas and Saben DeSpain, and Kaleb and Kylee Gordon. She also leaves behind her sisters, Ann Allen and Sara Goodnight, whose lasting friendship and support were deeply valued.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Hazel Lackey Gwaltney; her husband, Francis Stikeleather Jr.; her brother, Robert Gwaltney; and her sister, Carolyn Gwaltney.
