Michael Lewis Downing, age 72, born on Sunday, March 22, 1953, in Grafton County, New Hampshire, passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2025, at the Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem. Michael was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who lived a life rich with purpose and love.
As the owner operator of Grasche, a saw company, Michael dedicated many years to his craft, earning the respect of his colleagues and customers alike. His commitment to service extended beyond his business, as he also served as an Emergency Medical Technician with Search & Rescue, showcasing his unwavering desire to help others in times of need. He also donated eggs to The Hiddenite Helpers to help those need. He enjoyed reading his Bible and telling others about Jesus. Michael was a generous man that would help anyone in need and always put others before himself.
Michael cherished his family and was known to love his dogs deeply. He took great pleasure in spending time with his wife of 49 years, Joanne Downing, and their children: Ember Rose Downing, Danielle Downing (married to Chris Gates), and Nathan Downing. His legacy continues through his beloved grandchildren, Ava, Carter, Scarlett Gates. He is also survived by his siblings, Cheryl Downing-Hall, Dennis Downing, Jeffery Downing. Michael’s affection for his fur babies, Bambi, Scar, and Mama highlighted his nurturing spirit.
In addition to his family, Michael had a rich tapestry of hobbies and interests. He enjoyed being outdoors, discovering the tranquility of nature through fishing and gardening. Music was a vital part of his life, often providing a soundtrack to his experiences. As a writer, he expressed himself through poetry, capturing his thoughts and emotions on paper. Furthermore, Michael had a keen interest in gun collecting, which reflected his appreciation for history and craftsmanship.
Michael was predeceased by his parents, Louis Rodney Downing and Rosalie Turmelle Downing.
The community is invited to celebrate Michael's life during a visitation on Saturday, July 12, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 2:45 pm, followed by a memorial service beginning at 3:00 pm, both held at Crosspoint Church located at 5860 US-64, Taylorsville, NC 28681. Rev. Chris Meade will officiate. Inurnment will be with the family.

Michael touched the lives of many, and his spirit will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
