April 26, 1950 — March 24, 2026

Robert “Bert” Henry Huffman, age75, a devoted family man, passed away peacefully at his home in Alexander County on March 24, 2026. Born on April 26, 1950, in Catawba County, he lived a life marked by dedication, warmth, and enduring love for his family and passions.

As the owner of Hickory Smokehouse BBQ, Bert was known not only for his culinary skill and entrepreneurial spirit but also for the welcoming atmosphere he fostered within his establishment. His talents in cooking extended beyond his business; he was a man who truly enjoyed preparing meals, a joy he often shared with those closest to him.

Bert’s interests were varied and deeply personal. A lover of the outdoors, he treasured moments spent outside with his family, whether gardening, watching birds, or simply appreciating nature’s quiet beauty. He also found delight in reading, always eager to expand his knowledge and engage his mind.

His commitment to spiritual growth was demonstrated through his active participation at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Lenoir.

Bert’s family was the cornerstone of his life. He is lovingly survived by his wife of 54 years, Joy Huffman; his children, Myra Ward (Tim), Robbie Huffman (Carley), and Leslie Pennell (Myron); and his grandchildren Jonathan Huffman (Kelsey), Jessica McRary (Will), Josh Ward (Lauren), Lucy Huffman, Elliot Huffman, Charlie Huffman, and Marissa Pennell. His legacy continues through his seven great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy. He is also survived by his sisters Sylvia Whisnant, Marion Reese, and Laura Elkins (Charles), along with his fur babies Tootsie, Buddy and George, and several nieces and nephews who remember him fondly.

Bert was preceded in death by his parents, Luther Pinkney Huffman and Mary Katherine Rhodes Huffman, as well as his brothers Luke Huffman and Nelson Huffman.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Carolina Caring Hospice. Donations may be made to Carolina Caring in memory of Bert, 3975 Robinson Rd, Newton, NC 28658.
