Ruby Sue Watts Bumgarner, age 98, a beloved figure in the hearts of many, was born on July 10, 1927, in Alexander County. She peacefully transitioned from this life on November 17, 2025, at the Taylorsville House in Alexander County, surrounded by the warmth of her cherished memories and the love of her family.
Throughout her life, Ruby was known for her deep commitment to her family and her unwavering spirit. As a dedicated homemaker, she poured her heart into creating a nurturing environment. Ruby's greatest joy was spending time with her family, where she would often weave together memorable moments filled with laughter and joy. Her love extended beyond words; it was palpable in the dishes she lovingly prepared, especially cooking for loved ones.
A devoted member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church, Ruby's voice resonated within its walls as a cherished choir member for many years. Her spirit of service shone brightly as she took on the role of Sunday School teacher for adult ladies, touching the lives of many through her kindness and wisdom. Her presence in the church was marked by a genuine love for God and her community, making her a guiding light to those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Ruby's family was her world. She is survived by her loving son, Roger Bumgarner (Robin), son-in-law Darrell Presnell, and her cherished grandchildren: Tasha Nail (Michael), Cory Presnell (Suzannah), Jon Presnell (Jamison), Josh Bumgarner (Leah), and Brittney Payne (Jason). Her legacy carries forth through her 14 great-grandchildren, who will undoubtedly continue to honor her memory with love and laughter. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law Lindsay Bumgarner and Carol Bumgarner, and sister-in-law Mary Kate Watts.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Jeff and Manola Watts; her devoted husband, Robert V. Bumgarner; her daughter, Laura Presnell; her infant brother, Clyde Watts; and her brothers, James Watts, Lynn Watts and Ralph Watts. Ruby was also preceded in death by her sisters—Winnie Rogers, Opal Harrington, Mildred Watts, and Jewel Bumgarner.
As Ruby's family and friends prepare to honor her remarkable life, a visitation will take place on Saturday, November 22, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 2:45 pm at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, located at 4710 All Healing Springs Road, Township of Taylorsville, NC. Following the visitation, a funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Rick Safriet, Rev. Jason Payne, Rev. Steve Dagenhart, and Rev. Cody Bullman will officiate. Richard Bumgarner, Greg Bumgarner, Danny Bumgarner, Ronnie Bumgarner, Jeffrey Watts, and Tom Fortner will serve as pallbearers.
The family will accept flowers, or donations may be made to Alexander Hospice, 50 Lucy Echerd Lane, Taylorsville, NC 28681.
Ruby leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and family—an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. Her spirit will continue to shine in the memories shared, the songs sung, and the love that binds her family together.
