Sandra Lee Davis Smith

June 20, 1945 — October 22, 2025

Sandra Lee Davis Smith, age 80, was born on Wednesday, June 20, 1945, in the District of Columbia. She peacefully passed away on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at the Valley Nursing Center in Alexander County, leaving behind a legacy of love and devotion that will be cherished by all who knew her.

During her working career, Sandra dedicated herself to several roles that reflected her strong work ethic and commitment to her community. Her journey included time spent at Carolina Glove Mill, Royal Comfort Chair, Southern Devices, Hancock and Moore, and most notably, she had a profound impact at Alexander County Schools in the Before and After School Care program at Ellendale Elementary School.

Sandra was a woman of many passions. Cooking, traveling, camping, going to ball games, and sewing were just a few of the joys that filled her life. She found particular delight in creating clothes for her family, a testament to her nurturing spirit and her cherished role as a caregiver. Her family was her pride and joy; she deeply valued the moments spent with them, always putting their needs above her own. Sandra and Bruce fostered children for 18 years, loving and caring for over 100 children.

A devoted member of Antioch Baptist Church, Sandra's faith played a pivotal role in her life. She loved her church and the community it fostered and took on the important role of chairperson of The Kitchen Committee while also being an active member of the Merry Hearts Sunday School Class. These contributions showcased not only her commitment to her faith but also her genuine care for the people surrounding her.

She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Bruce E. Smith, alongside her children Melissa Autry (Carl) of Statesville, Rhonda Hamby (Doug), and Roger Smith (Lisa), all of Taylorsville. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Travis Pennell (Hope), Brandon Hamby (Kayla) all of Taylorsville, Dustin Hamby (Rebecca) of Hickory, Casey Helton of Statesville, as well as Riley Smith (Ruthie) of Archdale. Moreover, she took immense pride in her role as a great-grandmother to Christopher Pennell, Caitlyn Pennell, Keaton Hamby, Blaine Hamby, Aspen Hamby, and Ronan Hamby, and her heart swelled with joy in knowing her love and teachings would carry through to future generations. Sandra is also survived by her sister, Millie Walton of Hickory, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will fondly remember her warmth and kindness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Benton Davis and Catherine Royal Davis, and her mother and father-in-law, Jay and Edna Smith.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at Antioch Baptist Church from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Chance Kuzma and Rev. Mark Morris will officiate. Travis Pennell, Brandon Hamby, Dustin Hamby, Riley Smith, Christopher Pennell, and Ethan Weaver will serve as pallbearers.
