Sylvia Mae Ingle Pennell, age 72, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2026, at UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC. Born on February 28, 1954, in Iredell County, Sylvia’s life was marked by unwavering devotion to her family, her faith, and the simple joys she cherished.
Sylvia’s love for her family was evident in every aspect of her life. She is survived by her sons, Mark Pennell (Alyson) and Jamie Pennell (Whitney); her daughter, Denise Johnson; and her grandchildren: Jessi, Lyndsi, Carter, Macie, Harper, and Chase. Her warmth also graced the lives of her nieces, Elisha, Leah, Melissa, and Tabitha, as well as her nephew, Wesley. Sisters-in-law Ann Maye and Shirley Clayburn, and a number of great-nieces and nephews were treasured members of Sylvia’s extended family, and she held each of her loved ones close to her heart.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Dennis Earl Pennell; her cherished parents, Franklin Buren Ingle and Ola Mae Bowles Dishman; her sister, Kay Shook; her brother, Frankie Ingle.
Sylvia lived a life centered around care and kindness. She especially loved her grandchildren and took immense joy in being an active and nurturing presence in their lives. Sylvia’s devotion extended beyond her own household—she was always ready to support and care for her wider family, ensuring that each person felt cherished and understood.
A woman of faith, Sylvia was a member of Community Baptist Church. She loved attending church services and was active in her Senior Life Group at church until she was unable to attend. Her deep connection to her faith community was an enduring source of strength and comfort throughout her life.
The impact Sylvia made on her family, church, and community will be remembered with affection and gratitude. Her unwavering love, her gentleness, and her quiet strength will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation, which will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Alexander Funeral Service, 193 NC-16, Taylorsville, NC 28681. The funeral service will be Saturday, August 22, 2026, in the Alexander Funeral Service Chapel at 6:00 pm. Burial will follow in the Little River Baptist Church Cemetery, 2070 Little River Church Rd, Taylorsville, NC 28681. Rev. Jeff Chapman, Rev. Tanner Mundy, and Rev. Mike Knight will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society, PO Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741, or to the hospice of your choice.
Sylvia’s legacy of love and dedication will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
