Tillis Eugene Rendleman Jr., a beloved husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully to go home to be with Jesus Christ his Lord and Savior on July 11, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on October 13, 1946, in Catawba County, North Carolina, Tillis was a devoted member of his community and a proud Army and U.S. Air Force veteran.
Tillis dedicated many years to his profession as a registered nurse, utilizing his Master's degree in science to provide compassionate care for those in need. His commitment to healthcare was matched only by his love for family and friends, particularly his wife, Betty Jean Lail Rendleman, who he always referred to as the absolute best friend and love of his life. Together, they shared a bond that was evident to all who knew them.
Along with his wife he is survived by his two sons, Tillis Eugene Rendleman III and Raymond Rendleman, along with his stepchildren: Eric Stilwell (Leigh), Teresa Darcus (Allen), and Robin Stilwell Ferrell. Sister Jackie Matthews (Dennis). His family continued to grow through the arrival of 14 grandsons and one granddaughter, with the exciting addition of a great-granddaughter on the way, along with a niece and nephew.
Tillis was a passionate sports fan, with a particular love for the Carolina Panthers and the Carolina Tar Heels. Throughout his life, he cherished fond memories of playing football, including being part of a team that achieved a state championship and remained undefeated during an entire season. This achievement notably earned him a place in the Catawba County Sports Hall of Fame.
Beyond his professional accomplishments and sports affiliations, Tillis enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He had a fondness for westerns, particularly "Gunsmoke" and "The Andy Griffith Show," he also loved to listen to his gospel music, which reflected his down-to-earth personality and appreciation for classic storytelling.
He was preceded in death by his father, Tillis Eugene Rendleman, Sr., and his mother, Lucille Louise Brooks Rendleman. As a tribute to his service, military rites will be provided to honor his legacy of dedication and sacrifice.
A memorial gathering will be held on July 14, 2025, at Alexander Funeral Service in Taylorsville, North Carolina, at 5:30 pm, as a tribute to his service, military rites will be provided to honor his legacy of dedication and sacrifice. This will be followed by a visitation from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Family and friends are invited to come share their memories and celebrate the life of this remarkable man who touched so many lives with his kindness and love.
