William Jackson Smith, affectionately known as Jackie, passed away on February 27, 2026, in Alexander County at the age of 83. Born on May 5, 1942, in Iredell County, Jackie lived a life rich in experience, dedication, and community service.
Throughout his career, Jackie was a respected farmer, known for his stewardship of many different animals. He was the proud owner of Hiddenite Dollar Plus and operated Jackie's Auction, where he showcased his skills as an accomplished auctioneer. His commitment to his community extended beyond business; he took care of the Gwaltney Ball Field and the Gwaltney Community Center, significantly contributing to the local area and its residents.
Jackie's love for his family was evident in all aspects of his life. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Martha Marlow Smith, of the home. Together, they raised three children who continue to honor his legacy: two daughters, Rebecca Bouchard (Tommy) of Hiddenite, Jacqueline Foy (Peter) of Catawba, and a son, Andrew Smith (Kara) of Hiddenite. His six grandchildren, Matthew Bouchard (Brittney), Jacob Bouchard (Maribel), Carly Foy (Christian), Claire Harrison (Ryan), Garren Smith (Lauren), and Paislee Smith, were a source of great pride and joy for him. Jackie was also a proud great-grandfather to Piper and William Bouchard.
He cherished his family ties, and his legacy will live on through them. Jackie is also survived by his sister, Helen Keever (Phillip), and he leaves behind a niece, Rhonda Waters (Roger), two nephews, Phil Keever (Tracy) and Joe Keever, a great-niece, Whitley Carrigan (Mark), and a great-nephew, Aaron Keever.
In addition to his family and friends, Jackie served his country as a veteran of the United States Army. His experience and dedication to service reflect a man who cared deeply for others.
Fishing was a passion that brought him great joy, providing him moments of tranquility and connection with nature.
Jackie's impact on his community and his family will be felt for generations to come. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jackson Oren Smith and Helen Campbell Smith.
